A book is like a harness of armor

…like looking at the arm defenses…

The funny thing about a book is that when you write it, it feels like a million sprawling words.

And when you edit it… until suddenly it’s compact and governable.

…and knowing what the complete harness must look like…

The word count hasn’t shrunk; it’s just that the end is now implicit in the beginning, and the middle now fits the two.

It’s like looking at – say – arm defenses and knowing what the complete harness must look like, even if there are pieces missing.

Each part of the book carries its own completeness and you know you have reached the middle of the end…
